What To Do When Google Home Won’t Connect To Spotify

It’s frustrating when you are ready to use your favorite app and it’s not working. It is definitely extra annoying when you are supposed to be able to get that app running and playing on your all-in-one Google Home. Maybe you aren’t sure  what to do when Google Home won’t connect To Spotify.

One of the common complaints out there since the release of Google Home is that it won’t connect to Spotify. Many times it says something like, “Spotify requires a premium account to work with Google Home.” But even users with a premium account say they can’t connect.

So what’s going on?

Google Home Won’t Connect To Spotify: What Should I Do?

Depending on your device, there may be a glitch in syncing the two programs when you set up Google Home that causes error messages like, “Something went wrong. Try again.”

Complaints that Spotify’s customer service tech solutions are out of date were rampant for a while. Temporary fixes where users simply used their Bluetooth pairing and used Google Home’s speaker as a Bluetooth speaker saved the day, but a permanent solution was needed.

Spotify and Google Home have been aware of this for some time and it seems to be resolved for the most part, but if it is happening to you, here is what you should do when Google Home won’t connect To Spotify.

Once you have downloaded the Google Home app, the Account Preferences option in the menu in the top-left corner should give you the Linked Media Accounts feature. From there, click on Spotify and make sure you have linked your account and are logged in.

Check to see if it’s working by saying “OK Google, play my Favorites on Spotify,” or whatever you want to hear. You can also say, “OK Google, turn up the volume on Spotify.”

If you don’t want to have to say “on Spotify” every time, go into Google Home and make Spotify your default player. You can do this by tapping the menu in the top-left corner again, choosing Music and Spotify, then setting it as the default player when you use Google Home.

By this point, if Google Home won’t connect to Spotify still, there are a few troubleshooting things that you can do:

  • Log out and log back in on Spotify, and make sure you have signed out everywhere you might be signed in on. Close out all of your apps and restart your device, then reinstall the Spotify app. If it still is not working, try the next troubleshooting tip.
  • Maybe it’s your device. Use Spotify Connect to see if Spotify is playing on another device. If not, make sure the correct audio output is being used by your device. Look in the volume settings in Mixer, where Spotify’s volume channel is. Be sure it’s on high and not muted. If all of this looks right, verify that your hardware is working correctly and your device does not need any updates. Streaming also can be affected by low memory.

Be sure you have the latest Spotify downloads. These have fixes for the glitches.

As of August 2018, most users who had said that Google Home won’t connect to their Spotify were able to fix their issues using one of these troubleshooting methods. Between Google Home and Spotify working together to solve the issue, newer devices and updates should not have a problem at all.

If you still can’t get yours to work with all of these troubleshooting fixes, though, you may need to contact Google Home directly as it seems agreed upon that it is a problem on their end, not Spotify’s.
